Celebrating the Legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. State of Iowa Holiday Observance January 2011
The Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Ceremony is a state celebration sponsored by the Iowa Commission on the Status of African-Americans. The program includes participating in the nationwide bell ringing ceremony and features special guests, entertainment, refreshments and the presentation of the Third Annual MLK Lifetime Achievement Awards. The awards recognize individuals who have demonstrated commitment to the vision of Dr. King by promoting the racial equality of all people of Iowa. In order to be considered to receive this award, one must have demonstrated a lifetime commitment to diversity and inclusion in his or her community and in the State of Iowa.
The speech "Drum Major Instinct," was used as the basis for creating this award. In it the late Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., said this:
"Everybody can be great. Because anybody can serve. You don't have to have a college degree to serve. You don't have to make your subject and your verb agree to serve. You don't have to know about Plato or Aristotle to serve. You don't have to know Einstein's Theory of Relativity to serve. You don't have to know the second theory of thermodynamics in physics to serve. You only need a heart full of grace. A soul generated by love."
