Information coming soon!
Cost: There is no cost to attend the "Youth In Action for a Healthy Iowa" workshops for your team. Mileage reimbursements are provided to schools. Lunch and light refreshments will also be provided during the day.
Goal: The day will be filled with discussions on wellness, physical activity, and healthy eating habits. Students who have an interest in wellness will work with other students and their teams to identify problems and suggest solutions that make sense to them on how to improve healthy school environments, communities and individual health habits, to prevent rising rates of childhood obesity.
The Iowa Department of Education’s Team Nutrition Program and the SIYAC sponsored a symposium on November 19th, 2008 at Iowa State University in which sixty high school students and their adult advisors from 16 Iowa high schools spent the day finding ways to improve their school health environments. Ideas to improve nutrition and increase physical activity were discussed, questions answered and solutions put into action plans.
School teams offered insightful views on how best to address this age group’s health habits in a day that was packed with great information and a lot of interaction/participation via keypad polling. Diana Reed, former Miss Iowa spoke on "Exercising Your Character" and Dan Wardell, IPTV, gave a motivational send off presentation, "Go Forth Healthy Heroes."
Five $500 grants were granted to schools who submitted grant applications with plans to address and improve wellness issues in their communities.
